The Sharon Historical Society’s December 10th quarterly meeting will feature a FIRST-HAND account of 5 year old Pamela’s eight day survival in the rugged White Mountains of New Hampshire. With the aid of photographs, her brother, Ted Hollingworth will share this amazing story of one of the largest search and rescue missions in US history.
The remarkable story of 5 year old Pamela Hollingworth riveted the nation in the fall of 1941. She became the subject of a massive search and rescue missions when she wandered alone into the Rugged New Hampshire White Mountains. 82 years has passed since one of the largest search and rescue missions in US history riveted this nation. Every adult who was involved in the story firsthand or participated in the search, is likely gone now.
On September 28, 1941, 5 year old Pamela Hollingworth wandered away from her family picnic into the rugged woods of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. For the next 8 days and nights, she defied the elements and all logic, wearing only sneakers and a pair of overalls to protect her against frequent rain and freezing temperatures, sometimes hitting the mid 20s. An estimated six thousand military, law enforcement, and civilian volunteers imperiled themselves by scouring the craggy terrain day and night despite increasingly bleak prospects. Pammie’s father, Joe, steadfastly pressed-on and motivated countless others to cling to his belief that his plucky little 45 pound daughter had the grit and resolve to persevere.
Pamela’s brother, Ted Hollingworth was 9 years old on that day. He is now in his 90s, and happens to be a gifted speaker. Ted is retired after a fascinating career that included work on top secret US Government and Department of Defense projects and distinguished teaching careers at Emerson College (54 years)* [not a typo] and Harvard University (36 years)* [also not a typo]. With the aid of historical photographs, Ted will give us his first-hand account of the incredible search, how Pammie was found, her remarkable recovery, and the aftermath of the ordeal.
