Sharon Historical Society
At the Spring Quarterly Meeting, Colonel Joe Blansfield will offer the story of what was once one of Sharon's premier and most profitable industries--the harvesting of ice.
Beginning in the early 1800’s, long before the age of electricity and refrigeration, ice was the common method of keeping perishable items cool and fresh. We’ll discuss the history of the ice industry in Sharon and beyond. You will learn how ice was har vested from places like Lake Massapoag and Mann’s Pond. See some of the original tools such as ice saws and tongs that are part of the Sharon Historical Society’s collection.
The program is free and open to anyone interested--there's no need to be a Historical Society member to attend (although we'd love to have you become one if you're not already.)
A brief business meeting with updates about Society activities will be held at 2:30 and the presentation will begin at 3:00 PM, followed by refreshments and conversation. The museum will also remain open for its usual 4-6 PM open hours, to allow plenty of time to browse the exhibits.
